Confidential Ballroom kicks off

Manchester Confidential’s Strictly Ballroom is underway and the 20+ willing participants are now well on their way to being able to waltz and salsa with the best of them.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be catching up with each of our contestants; documenting their rise from flat-footed amateurs to elegant dancers over the course of three months.

The lessons are courtesy of Jen Ashton and Ollie Olmedo, at the Manchester branch of Sunshine Studios, a group of centres of excellence for dance and the arts which can also be found in Bolton, Blackburn, Liverpool, Stoke-on-Trent and Nottingham.

The studios themselves will be undergoing a dramatic transformation both inside and out over the next couple of months, but they will still be open for the general public; so if you’re looking to try something new or unleash your creative side, head down there.

LA Style is strongly influenced by a host of other dancing techniques, including mambo, swing, Argentine tango and Latin ballroom, and places a strong emphasis on sensuousness, theatricality, aerobics and musicality.

The LA Style in its current form was also pioneered by some of the most influential people in dance, with Albert Torres, Laura Canellias and Joe Cassini among the names credited with much of its early growth and development.

The waltz is a ballroom and folk dance, dating back from the 16th century, performed primarily in a closed position. The word ‘waltz’ is taken from the Italian word for ‘revolve’, and the dance unsurprisingly features a series of turns, as well as sliding and glancing movements across the floor.

Originating from a German rustic dance, the Landler, the waltz flourished in the 19th century within the dance halls of Vienna, before gaining in popularity the world over.

Sunshine Studios in Manchester currently boasts seven dance studios, one drama studio, one photography studio and more than 25 music and rehearsal rooms available for hire and used by list of clients including ITV, the BBC, Channel Four and Sky.
