The most acclaimed female opera singer on the planet is in Manchester this week and we have the two best tickets in the house to give away. Valued at £65 (total value £130) these get you as close as possible to the power and beauty of Cecilia Bartoli’s voice.
The Italian is performing at The Bridgewater Hall with the Basel Chamber Orchestra on Friday 3 December at 7.30pm. She’ll be illuminating the hall with a hauntingly lovely programme called Sacrificium: The School of Castrati.
Bartoli will introduce works by Porpora, Broschi, Caldara, Leo, Vinci, Araia and Handel, showcasing the neglected repertoire written for the men who were castrated as boys in the name of music.
She told Confidential: ‘The castrati where the pop stars of their age. They had super-human singing abilities, fame and glamour but it was the mystery surrounding their ambiguous sexuality which made people go mad. What we should not forget is that while the music written especially for them is wonderful, it was bought at the price of a great human sacrifice.’
