But where to go for the best? The whisper got louder and eventually we were led to Maggie Mays cafe in Bold Street. We scoured the blackboard in hungry anticipation but, alas, it wasn't there.
Disappointed we were about to leave when we spotted a pile of tins on display. “We might not have scouse on the menu,” purred a lady wielding a tin opener. “But sit down and I'll bring you some over.”
Made with potatoes, carrots, and onions with cubed beef in a rich gravy, Maggie Mays' scouse proved to be delicious and warming, just the thing on a freezing summer's day.
