Can't afford to whisk your lover away to Rome for Valentine's Day? Little Pizza Kitchen in Waterloo might not have the grandeur of the Eternal City but it can compete when it comes to the food. A host of awards and an emphasis on the best ingredients have raised this place above the usual standard of the high street Italian. And in this competition you can win a three-course meal for two there, including wine. Go on Valentine's Day if you like (or choose another night if you'd prefer to by-pass the moon-eyed couples).
This diminutive, 28-seater restaurant has been delighting residents with its menu of pizzas, pasta, home-made burgers, and anti-pasta since it opened in 2009. It didn't take long before it was getting attention on a national level for its food.
The Little Pizza kitchen won the prestigious Gold Award for Independent Pizza Restaurant of the Year 2009 at the PAPA Awards. And it was shortlisted for Designer of the Year and National Pizza Restaurant of the Year. (PAPA is the Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Association, in case you were wondering.)
The judges were impressed with Little Pizza Kitchen's back to basics approach – they don't buy anything in that they can make better themselves, and they only use the best-quality, freshest ingredients.
For example, their dough is made using tipo ‘00’ flour, extra virgin olive oil and sea salt – which tastes better and is healthier than your average pizza dough. And their base sauce is slowly cooked for a minimum of four hours and uses fresh herbs to help maximise the flavour. Some of their toppings are a little out of the ordinary as well – the Popeye pizza features quails eggs along with lemon spinach and pecorino romano shavings.
Go along to see why Little Pizza Kitchen is becoming a neighbourhood favourite. You'll find it at 44 St Johns Road in Waterloo. It's open Tuesday-Sunday. To read more about it and see the menus, click here.
