Wry journalist and broadcaster Will Self, he of the often disturbing novels and stories, and often amusing appearances on Have I Got News For You?, is coming to The Brindley, Runcorn, next month as part of the annual Talkwrite Festival in Halton – which, say organisers “is set to be bigger and better than ever”.
This year's event, part of the 2008 National Year Of Reading, is titled Mind And Body. There are all sorts of marvellous events happening, but it all ulminates in an audience with Will - one of Britain's most respected contemporary authors - on Thursday 15 May.
Will, best known for his fantastic novels set in seemingly parallel universes, which include Great Apes, Cock & Bull, How The Dead Live and The Book of Dave, is no stranger to Merseyside. In 2002 he took part in a 'reality art' project in a one-bedroom flat on the 20th floor of a tower block in Sheil Road, writing a short piece of fiction while being watched by members of the public. The event was sponsored by Liverpool Housing Action Trust to mark the passing of high-rise housing in the city.
One suspects he will be putting himself up in slightly more salubrious surroundings on this occasion where organisers promise he will be signing copies of his latest novel.
If you want to go, or find out more about the festival, see The Brindley's website on www.brindley.org.uk or call The Brindley on 0151 907 8360.
